Chinese jewelry designers take three of top spots in HRD Awards jewelry contest

HRD Antwerp announced the names of the winners of the HRD Awards contemporary diamond jewelry contest at a gala event in Beijing in late October. The HRD Awards contest, organised by HRD Antwerp and held every two years, was co-organised by the Gem & Jewellery Trade Association of China (GAC) and sponsored by Tesiro. 

New Israel Diamond Exchange President Aiming For Quick Change

Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE) President Shmuel Schnitzer has wasted little time in moving to bring about change on the key issues he identified during his campaign following the October 9 elections where he defeated incumbent, Yair Sahar. “In a sense it has been relatively easy for me to adjust to this position because I am not new to it, having been president from 1998 to 2004,” he said. “It’s a good feeling and I feel very comfortable. I ran for election because I feel I have a lot to contribute.”

Varda Shine To Leave De Beers in January

De Beers says that Varda Shine, Executive Vice President of Global Sightholder Sales, will be stepping down and leaving the company at the end of January 2014.
Shine, formerly the Managing Director of the Diamond Trading Company in London, is the most senior De Beers official not to move to Botswana.
Paul Rowley, Senior Vice President of Midstream Operations for Global Sightholder Sales, succeeds Shine as Executive Vice President.

Shmuel Schnitzer Wins Election For IDE Presidency


Former Israel Diamond Exchange president Shmuel Schnitzer has been re-elected to the post. Schnitzer previously served as IDE president from 1998 to 2004.
He replaces Yair Sahar who served just one term as president after being elected two years ago.
Schnitzer, began in the diamond industry in 1972, and is a well known figure in the Israeli and global diamond industry.

Dubai Diamond Exchange Appoints Zimbabwe Official as Director


Prince Mupazviriho, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development of Zimbabwe, has been appointed by the Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE) to its board of directors.
Ahmed bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, DMCC said:  "The Dubai Diamond Exchange has gained global recognition and is currently ranked among the world's top three market places for rough diamonds. With prominent industry executives on the Board of Directors, we are confident of enhancing Dubai's strength as an attractive diamond trading hub.

Mellier Confident Anglo American Committed to Keeping De Beers

In a wide-ranging press briefing in Tel Aviv. De Beers Chief Executive Officer Philippe Mellier and Executive Vice President of De Beers Global Sightholder Sales, Varda Shine provided information relating to major elements of the company's activities. They also answered questions, although were careful to avoid any references to production or financial figures since the media meeting was held a month before the financial results for the first half of 2013 were to be published on July 26.

HRD Antwerp Says Deadline Reached for Submitting Awards Designs

With the deadline for submitting finished jewelry pieces by the 31 designers whose creations were selected to go through to the finals of HRD Antwerp's biennial jewelry awards having passed, the competition is closing in on the finals. The 2013 edition of the awards set a new record, with 2,013 designs submitted.

The overall winner and four finalists will be selected by an international jewelry in July. And for the first time in the history of the awards, the public is being invited to take part by voting for what they consider to be the best design.

Zale Corp Appoints Terry Burman as Chairman

Zale Corp reported net earnings of $5 million for the third fiscal quarter compared with a loss of $5 million in the year-earlier quarter. Revenues were almost unchanged at $443 million from $445 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2012.

Comparable store sales edged up 1.4 percent, following an 8-percent rise in the same period last year. At constant exchange rates, comparable store sales rose 1.7 percent. Meanwhile, adjusting for the impact of February 29 in fiscal 2012, comparable store sales increased 2.6 percent.

Israel Diamond Exchange Welcomes CIBJO Conference Delegates


The Israeli diamond exchange held a special ceremony for members of CIBJO taking part in the annual congress in Tel Aviv. IDE President Yair Sahar presented awards of appreciation to outgoing World Diamond Council President Eli Izhakoff and CIBJO Chairman Gaetano Cavalieri.

Diamond Trading Company Southern Africa Awards Shining Lights Prizes

The Diamond Trading Company's Southern Africa Shining Lights Awards diamond jewelry design awards have been announced.

Competitions were held in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa with the theme being Women of Africa, Your Light Shines.

There were 103 entries for the Namibia Diamond Trading Company (NDTC) competition with the awards evening showcasing eight pieces of diamond jewelry from the seven finalists containing more than 14,000 polished diamonds with a combined wholesale value of in excess of $1 million.
