Godwills Masimirembwa will remain chairman of the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC), said Zimbabwe's Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.
Secretary for Mines and Mining Development, Prince Mupazviriho, said that Zimbabwe's former ambassador to China and political analyst, Christopher Mutsvangwa, has been appointed chairman of the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ). The appointments are effective as of December 28, 2012.
Mupazviriho said the two companies are vital to the strategic development of the country's mining industry. "The strategic nature of these two entities cannot be overemphasized," he told allafrica.com.
"However, given the challenges emanating from the illegal sanctions imposed on these entities and their subsidiaries may I implore the newly-appointed boards to be creative and innovative to ensure the country continues to enjoy full benefits from its mineral wealth," he added.
The agreement in 2011 by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme to agree to exports from the Marange area and ongoing efforts to revive small-scale miners enable Zimbabwe to focus on growth of other sectors of the economy, Mupazviriho said.
This would lead to the revival of more mining companies that are currently closed, he added.
